Beeville, Texas is a small town in Medina County, Texas. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on FM 1960 about 12 miles southeast of Waco and 13 miles northeast of Austin. Beeville was founded in 1881 by Captain James Fenton and his family as a log cabin community called Cedar Grove. Beeville is named for General Sam Houston who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became president of the United States. The town developed around Methodist churches which were built from scratch or rebuilt following floods or other natural disasters. Many of these churches still stand today including First Baptist Church (founded in 1892), Second Presbyterian Church (1898), Third Baptist Church (1902), and Fourth Baptist Church (1907). The post office was established at Beeville in 1881, and continued to be used until it closed on September 30, 1951. At that time, it had a population of just 10 residents. The first school district in Medina County was created in 1886 when voters approved a proposal to create an academy to teach agriculture and mechanics to young people between the ages of 7 and 14 years old. This school district served students from Beaverville through Greenville until 1911 when it merged with the Medina School District to form the Medina County Schools system which continues today. In 1901, Beeville donated land for what would become Baylor University’s Hargrave Campus which opened its doors on October 1, 1902. The university has since grown into one of Southwestern Texas’ most prestigious institutions with over 100 undergraduate programs across six faculties: arts & sciences; business; education; health sciences; law & criminology/police science; music & dance/speech pathology/dentistry/ Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Science
