In 1881, Bedford, Texas was the location of a small town that became known as "The Rifle Range". The town was founded by migrants from eastern Kentucky and Tennessee who were seeking mineral rights in what is now southern Texas. The men built a few crude homes around a large rifle range where they would shoot skeet and deer. As the town grew, so did its focus on guns. In 1903, the state of Texas passed an act that allowed shotguns to be imported into the state without license. This opened up new opportunities for gun owners in Bedford, and soon there were several shops selling shotguns and rifles. One such shop was run by Wm Henson, who also ran a post office and grocery store. By 1907, Bedford had become one of the most important shooting communities in Texas. It had a well-educated population with experience with firearms, and it became home to several major gun shows each year. In 1911, Bedford hosted its first international shotgun championships which attracted top shooters from all over America. "In 1913," write historian John Worthman “Bedford city (population 10) boasted two general stores; one operated by Mr Wm Henson; another by Geo Prentice; three other churches: First Methodist (Avenue E), Second Baptist (Greene Street), Third Presbyterian (Naylor Street). A post office;; JA’s Hotel - four blocks east of present day Uptown square - served as the center for socializing in town during summer months."
