The pistol was made by George Wigglesworth of England and is now in the collection of the Adair County Historical Society. In 1916, the Bedford Rifle and Pistol Club joined forces with the San Antonio Gun Club to form the Texas Rifle Association (TRA). In 1924, TRA became a member of both NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and IRA (International Red Cross Association). The club purchased another rifle from the San Antonio Arsenal on October 15, 1925. This rifle is currently in preservation at the University of Texas at Austin’s Institute for American History.
Bedford is a small town in Erath County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,668 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Erath County. Bedford is located in the west central part of the state and straddles the border of Nueces and Medina counties. The name "Bedford" comes from two early settlers: John Bedford and his wife Sarah (née Thatcher). Mrs. Thatcher's father had been born in England and immigrated to America in 1847 with his family. When he died, Mrs. Thatcher's mother took her son John to America so that he could find work and provide for his mother and siblings back home. John Bedford arrived in what is now Bedford County on October 9, 1851, soon after Texas became an independent country under Republic Act 10991 According to one source, early residents of what would become Bedford were farmers who grew corn, beans, wheat, cattle and other goods necessary for their subsistence while others hunted game or fished for catfish on nearby creeks and rivers. In 1859 a post office was established at present day Bedford with mail sent via stagecoach to Galveston In 1865 local resident James Humble donated land southeast of town along Clear Fork Creek which later became known as Humble Park The community first saw development when a railroad line was built through it by builders named Ewing & Waddell which connected Galveston with San Antonio The importance of this new transportation artery led to increased trade throughout much of Texas during these years However development did not stop there; within five years another railroad had been built north-south routing through town providing further opportunities for growth including mills manufacturing flour, cottonseed oil, lumber and shoes By 1870 business had reached such levels that Griggs & Hawley built a large brick building known as the General Store which still stands today south of Main Street . This building served as both a commercial center for town citizens as well as housing until 1915 when it burned down
