The first courthouse in Bedford opened in 1886 and served for several years until it was destroyed by arson in 1888. In 1903, Bedford became an incorporated town with a landowning elite that included some of the early settlers from other towns along the Buffalo Bayou such as Waco, Round Rock, and Fort Worth. In 1915, when Dallas-Fort Worth annexed much of Hood County, Bedford's status changed to that of a rural township withinDallas-Fort Worth limits only; however, its government still remained autonomous due to its small size and lack of representation within Dallas-Fort Worth city government. In 1923zonation changes again resulted in Bedford being placed under jurisdiction of Dallas-Fort Worth City Schools District No 4 (then called Humble Independent School District). Bedford is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. Bedford has been called "the Birthplace of Texas" and "The Foundry of American Democracy." The area that would eventually become Bedford was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s, though there is no record of any activity taking place here until 1836 when two men named James Fenton and John Rankin discovered oil shale near what is now Bedford. A short time later, Fenton founded an oil refinery here which process crude oil from nearby reservoirs to produce gasoline and other products for local residents and businesses. The refinery continued to operate until it closed in 1956. John Rankin also played a significant role in helping to found Baylor University (now Baylor University School of Medicine) in Houston back in 1875 - one of only a few universities east of the Mississippi River at that time. In 1902, he donated land south of downtown to build what would become Baylor's main campus - one which still stands today! The City of Bedford purchased this land from Rankin in 1935 through a program known as "Greater Bedford's Opportunity". This effort helpedto bring new life to what had been an aging city center several blocks north of downtown - making it possible for Bedford to experience rapid growth during its ensuing years!
