Bedford is a town in Red River County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. The name of Bedford is derived from the nearby Bedford Plantation. The first settler in Bedford was John Clements who arrived in 1836 and named it after his home county of Bedfordshire, England. By 1840, there were 10 settlers living in Bedford. A post office was established at Bedford in 1849 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, the Railroad Commission granted a right-of-way to the Southwestern Railway through Bedford so that goods could be transported between Dallas and Fort Worth without having to go through Houston or Corpus Christi. This railroad became known as the "Bedford route". In 1899, Leland Stanford Sr., one of Palo Alto's largest land owners and founder of Stanford University (later Stanford University School of Medicine), donated 7 acres (2 ha) near what is now downtown Bedford to build a new high school for students from Red River County Schools District No. 2 which he had organized two years earlier. The school opened on September 15th, 1900 under the name "Red River High School" but soon changed its name to "Stanford Junior College" due to opposition by some residents who felt they were being taken advantage of by their wealthier classmates; however, Classes began on October 5th with only 25 students enrolled because no building had yet been erected! In 1907, when Bedford Consolidated School District #2 merged with another district (#4), Stanford Junior College became part of that new district too - making it one of the few institutions east of the Mississippi River not subject to consolidation! An agricultural college also developed close by: Southern Methodist University (now Baylor University). It would be closed down during World War II when all agriculture schools were closed due to shortages of feedstock materials caused by Nazi Germany's invasion and occupation policies. After World War II ended there still wasn't enough demand for agriculture so SMU reopened as an education institution called Baylor College –Texas Agricultural Center where today we have over 50 undergraduate programs including Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science with specialties such as Dairy Science & Dairy Technology
