In 1879, a man named John Bedford bought land in the town of Bedford, Texas. He named his property "Bedford Ranch" and began to develop it into a small but successful ranch. The ranch was originally a mixture of adobe and limestone; however, over time Bedford developed an agricultural program that made him one of the most important landowners in the area. His land extended from present-day Bedford to east side of San Antonio and included parts of what is now Waco, Austin, Dallas, Hendersonville, Carthage and much of Aubrey County. In addition to his ranching interests, Bedford also built several churches and contributed significantly to local cultural life. His home in Bedford still stands today as one of the most intact examples of early 20th century ranch architecture in central Texas. During World War II (1941-1945), Bedford was one of many farmers who voluntarily offered their services to the government in order to produce food for military purposes. After the war he continued to donate land and resources to various local organizations until he died at the age of 91 years old on October 21st, 1978. His legacy continues on through these days as part of the community's history - many residents still refer to him simply as "Mr."

However, it has experienced significant growth since its incorporation as a town; most notably through the establishment of several businesses and agricultural products companies which have helped to drive progress in both the local economy and beyond community boundaries
