In 1967, Bedford voters passed a resolution to change its name to Bedford- Kilgore Municipality after merging with Kilgore. The name change took effect on July 1, 1967. Bedford's history can be traced back to 1876 when it was founded as a small community near Clarksville by UT students George Armstrong Clements and Wm Jourdan Smith. In 1881, the community became an incorporated village under the name of Hebron before being renamed Bedford in 1887 following approval from then-County Judge James Laddington Caldwell III. The original construction of homes began shortly thereafter and soon enough Bedford had a post office and school. By 1902, businesses had begun to emerge including several stores such as Grote & Sons Hardware Store and Mr & Mrs Owens Drugs store which remain today among those most important residents have supported through their businesses over many decades since first opening shop there!

Austin also played an important role in World War II as a military base and manufacturing center for aircraft parts and munitions.
