In Bedford, Texas there have been references to guns swivels for over a century. In 1911, an inquest jury found that the pistol used in the shooting of Johnnie Cochran had been swapped in for another weapon at the gun store. At least two other shootings in Bedford took place with guns that had not previously been accounted for. The first reference to a gun swivel is from 1892 when Henry Hargrave patented his invention which allowed firearms owners to rotate their barrels 360 degrees so they could view them from different positions. This feature was eventually adopted by many countries as it made it easier for soldiers and civilians to aim their weapons without having to tuck them into their clothing. Swivels were also standard on cowboy revolvers until the early 1920s when stricter laws began banning these types of firearms in most states. However, some pistols still continued to be equipped with swivels until around 1930. The popularity of handguns and rifles led to increased demand for swivels on these platforms and Swivel guns became more common during this time period. Gunners who preferred using their pistols sideways would often purchase stocks that rotated about an axis perpendicular to the barrel's bore axis or "upright" stock rotation ( FIGURE 1 ). Other configurations included left-handed shooters who utilized a right-handed grip or those who favored holding their pistols upside down while sighting down the barrel (FIGURES 2A & 2B). There was no definitive answer when it came to how best to hold one's firearm when performing side-to-side swings or rotations; however, all three configurations generally involved good hand eye coordination and plenty of practice if desired results were desired.

The first successful application of gunswivels was used on an English cannon in 1598 known as "The Star" which fired projectiles using two hands while still in battery (at close range). By 1600, however, European artillery had progressed so far that handheld firing became difficult or impossible without additional modifications such as turning turrets which rotated the guns around their longitudinal axes; these turrets allowed for more efficient grenade discharge by giving them a convenient downward arc instead of up and down like rifles could do when discharged from above horizontally via musketeers' long barrels
