Bedford, Texas is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, located on the fringe of Fort Worth. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. Bedford is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community was founded by John Bedford in 1879 as a cotton plantation and grew to include a sawmill, grist mill, slave labor camp and distillery. The first post office was opened in 1881. The name of the community honor General James Longstreet who had helped to drive Mexico from its northern border during the Mexican–American War. In 1913, Bedford became known as "the most segregated town in America" due to its prohibition against interracial marriage. However, this stance changed when white members of the local school board authorized integration in 1961. This event led to increased black population growth and activism within the community which culminated with African American businessman Julius Davis Jr.'s donation of $1 million for local education purposes in 1984. In 2013, Bedford made national news when it announced that it would close its doors for good after years of struggles with budget cuts and low attendance rates at its schools. Despite being one of Tarrant County's poorest communities according to Forbes magazine's " 30 Under 30" list, Bedford residents have continue pushing for their own form of government including an effort to become a municipality within Tarrant County itself; however these efforts have failed every time since 2011 when county officials refused to give them what they wanted without creating more political headaches for themselves than necessary.
