The town was named after General Edmund Kirby Smith's headquarters during the Mexican-American War near Poteau City in Lyon County, Kansas Territory. The first post office in Bedford opened on December 4, 1872. In 1903 the local school board voted to change its name to Bedford High School for Girls because there were no high schools for girls in Hudspeth County at that time. The original high school building burned down in 1954 and it reopened as Bedford Junior High School before being replaced by the current building in 1959; it also served as the county courthouse from 1957 until 1988 when it was moved to Abilene and replaced by the current courthouse Annex Building (now known as Lady Bird Johnson University Center). The population of Bedford increased rapidly during World War II due to a large influx of Japanese Americans who had been relocated to northeastern Texas during that war pursuant to Executive Order 9066 which called for their forced relocation into designated areas within western U S A outside of San Francisco Bay Area cities includingOakland andSan Leandro; much of eastern Hudspeth County followed suit soon thereafter.
