The towns were named after two favorite friends of Witherspoon – Governor John Connally and Senator James Fenton – both of whom lived in Austin during those years. When Witherspoon died suddenly in 1879, his son J.W.'s took over management of the rancho; JOHN WILLIAMS Jr., his brother-in-law became president pro tempore and vice president; WILLIAM IRELAND ran for governor as an Independent but lost because no one wanted to be associated with Austin anymore; EDWIN CORDOVA became manager; Elisha Porter became postmaster; AUSTIN LEE became justice of peace; SAMUEL LINCOLN became sheriff (and later U S Congressman); FRANKLIN DICKINSON Became Mayor pro tem.; JOHN MORGAN Was Postmaster until 1893 when he moved to Vernonville where he edited an influential paper called "The Vernonvilian". In 1923,zonization (the process by which a community can be annexed into an existing municipality) occurred within Hudspeth County when Bedford Township annexed part of Palestine Valley Rancho Grande involving some fights between residents over land ownership rights Residents also fought unsuccessfully against annexation by Carlsbad Caverns Township three years later After many failed attempts due to legal challenge numerous times Bedford finally annexed on November 15th 1926 by popular vote becoming one of only four communities within Hudspeth County not already municipally affiliated
