Bedford is a small town in the county of Tyler, Texas, United States. The population was 1,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler–Farmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford was founded in 1876 as a post office and railroad depot on the Mexican Railroad near modern-day Bedford Mills. In 1909, Bedford became the first community to be designated by then-President William Howard Taft as an American city. In 1974, it was renamed Bedford after General Robert E. Lee's home state of Virginia. In that year, Mayor Don Garton announced plans to demolish most of the original buildings in order to make way for a new library and park complex on what were once agricultural fields now occupied by Bedford High School and two other public schools. The effort met with resistance from some residents who felt their homes had been taken away without their consent or compensation; however, Garton's proposal passed both houses of the Texas Legislature and went into effect as law. The area now known as downtown Bedford became one of the largest revitalization projects in East Texan history when it was developed over five years starting in 2006 by local businessman Jeff Bergeron and his wife Pamela Bergeron with assistance from private donors including Coca-Cola Co., FedEx Express Inc., Home Depot Co.,Toyota Motor Corporation and several local businesses formed what is now known as Downtown Development Authority (DDA). Downtown Development Authority has since developed into an anchor tenant for much of the retail corridor between IH-35W/McLennan Boulevard eastward to State Highway 613/Upper Slaughter Road northward including many restaurants such as Starbucks Coffee Company (opened in early 2018), Pete's Pizza Place (opened late 2017), Dunkin' Donuts & More (opened late 2016) along with various smaller retailers like Lowe’s Discount Hardware which opened its first store downtown in early 2018 adjacent to DDA headquarters; thus further evidence that redevelopment efforts are having positive impacts not just on the overall economic activity but also supportive social infrastructure elements necessary for healthy living communities across all types of neighborhoods

Bedford, Texas was founded in 1879 by the brothers John and George Bedford. In 1912, Bedford became one of the first American towns to be incorporated as a city. The city's growth continued through the years and in 1954, it merged with nearby Laredo to form a single city-state. Since then, Bedford has experienced rapid growth and redevelopment, becoming one of the most vibrant communities in Texas. Today, Bedford is known for its diverse cultural attractions including its large concentration of Italian-Americans; its public library system with more than 150 branches across the state; and its iconic red barns which are used for many events including rodeos and fairs.
Bedford was founded in 1836 by James Bedford and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for General John Bedford, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The townsite lay on a bluff overlooking the Brazos River. In 1892, a post office was established in the town. In 1936, the name of Bedford changed to Vernon after Vernon County, Texas was created from part of East Texas.
