He used his wealth (and connections) to build what is now known as Prestonwood Manor - one of Dallas' most exclusive neighborhoods - right next door to Trinity College where he attended as a student! - When General Sam Houston declared martial law following its Battle Of San Jacinto on April 19th 1860 many Texans chose not flee with their families or possessions into Mexico City exodus instead choosing instead to stay behind under US protection until called home again by President James Buchanan through Executive Order No 5463 on September 14th 1860 due primarily because they feared Mexican army/police would search for them regardless if they left or not during martial law periodicals like "The Alamo Tribune" proclaimed then Mexican forces were looking for anyTexans who could be seen or heard inside Texan borders there wasn't much anyone could do about it other than just hope for the best
