Forrest established a ranch named "Bedford" near present day Arlington after his victory. In 1865, General Houston Browne Blackburn purchased 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land adjacent to what is now Bedford from Forrest and renamed it Blackburn Ranch after himself. In 1916, Drury College moved its operations from Plano to Bedford because of World War I patriotism concerns over military draft dodging by students living in Plano without proper documentation. In 1925, Bedfordshire Elementary School became affiliated with Baylor University through an agreement between Baylor President Hays Leonard and Mrs Fenton Barker Caldwell who had donated $10,000 towards that goal while she lived in Fort Worth.[2] For several years following their move there were only three students at Drury: First Lady Alice Pauline Hebert (1925-1930),[3] then Mrs Cecil Biddlecombe Waters (1930-1934),[4] before Ruth Bowen Hebert came along[5][6][7] during President Harry Truman’s first term (1945-1949). Today there are around fifty students attending Drury College combined with Belmont Abbey Academy,[8][9][10] all located within walking distance of each other on Elm Street across from Weisman Library/Bedford Municipal Airport/Drury College Park – one block away from downtown Bedford Village Shopping Center! The tornado that struck central Texas on May 22nd destroyed much of the town including most homes but not Bedfordshire Elementary School where alumni such as Ruth Bowen Hebert still attend today!
