Bedford is a small town in Montgomery County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Bedford was founded on December 12, 1872 by Scots-Irish immigrants working for the Central Pacific Railroad. The town began as a farming community and grew to be a small city by 1915 when it became part of the new State of Texas. In that year, Bedford merged with neighboring Live Oak to form one municipality. In 1924, Bedford was annexed byHouston and its growth slowed but it did not disappear entirely from public view until the later 2000s when annexation rates increased within Houston's boundaries while Bedford's remained relatively static. That changed in 2006 when Mayor Sylvester Turner announced plans to annex Bedford again despite objections from some residents who felt their community had been mishandled during previous annexation attempts and fears that such an action would dilute their voice withinHouston's municipal government structure. Since then, Bedford has seen significant redevelopment with several new businesses opening up including an arts center (opened in 2009), a new elementary school (opened in 2013), and a large housing development (completed in 2017). As0102017 marks the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Bedford intoHouston – one hundred years after its founding – much discussion surrounds how this milestone will be celebrated and what future plans for the town may hold
