Bedford, Texas is a small town in Bowie County, Texas located on the south side of the Brazos River. The population was 2,691 at the 2010 census. The name "Bedford" originated from a fort built by James Bedford in 1836. The first settler in Bedford was John and Mary Hargrave who arrived in 1838. They were followed by John and Hannah Burkett who settled in 1840. Mrs. Burkett's son-in-law, David Starrfield (1831-1906), also moved to Bedford and established a wagon trade with settlers traveling through the area for goods such as flour, cornmeal, bacon and cheese. Mr. Starrfield later became the first postmaster of Bedford. In 1851, Drury & Co., merchants, erected a brick store building on Elm Street which served as their headquarters until they removed to Fort Worth in 1865. In 1871, Jno J Fenton bought land at what is now Elm Street and built his cotton gin thereon which he operated until his death in 1916. In 1898, Elisha White founded White Manufacturing Company here which manufactured radios and other appliances before being sold to General Electric Corporation in 1957. In 1907-08 Bedrock Coal Company operated a coal mine near present day Junction Road/Highway 183 about two miles east of town on private land acquired from Samuel A Berryhill for $5 per acre after Bedrock had failed to meet production quotas set by local officials during an inspection tour conducted February 10-12 that year en route to nearby Midland City where it was hoped Perry Mining & Smelting Company would take over operations following its acquisition of Midland's Escobedo mine two weeks earlier After Perry Mines went bankrupt early 1912 most of its assets were taken over by American Coal Fields Corporation making Bedford one of its key towns within this new enterprise although production never really improved over those years despite some investment . Production then decreased gradually until it stopped completely around 1915 when new mines opened up near Wichita Falls .
