Bedford is a town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Bedford was founded in 1881 by John Bedford and his wife Elizabeth Smith. The first post office in Bedford opened in 1886. The town was named after General George Washington Bedford and his wife Martha Custis Lee. The community of Valley View grew up around the Battle of San Jacinto (1846), during the Mexican-American War. On November 5, 1881, General Santa Anna's forces attacked Valley View; however, the defenders successfully repelled the enemy attack and drove them back to their encampment on nearby Hill 705 overlooking the village. The battle is commemorated with a historical marker located near the old schoolhouse where it took place. Valley View became part of Bedford when it incorporated on February 6, 1907. In 1932, Bedford experienced its most significant development when a new courthouse and jail were built by local entrepreneur Wirt Hargrave along with money from a state bond issue. As more people began moving into Bedford from surrounding towns such as Templeton or West Jordan, prices for land rose which resulted in much speculation among developers about what could be done with so many houses and businesses on one small piece of land. When World War II started and demand for military housing soared due to wartime needs such as airfields and camps across America, developers again turned to Bedford to build munitions plants that remain active today in nearby West Jordan or Templeton through various business ventures such as real estate development and manufacturing. In 1990s another round of economic growth came about when an ethanol plant was built just east of town adjacent to Interstate 10. A new high school has been built within walking distance of both services over the last several years. Today there are several businesses that have taken off due to technological advancements including Google Fiber coming through town which has led to increased job opportunities for locals
