Beaumont is a city in Beaumont County, Texas, United States. The population was 95,351 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Beaumont County. The city is named after General James K. Polk and pioneer educator and author Andrew Jackson Downing. The first recorded use of a light device to warn people of an attacker was a hand-held lantern by Captain John Fenton on October 5, 1839 while patrolling the area around Fort Worth Creek. A few weeks later, on November 8th 1839 Captain William Hogg used his native Scottish bonnet as a night stick to indicate he had seen someone coming from miles away waving a white flag in surrender when no one else could see it due to the darkness. In 1845 Major Isaac Newton founded Newton’s Rifle Works near present day downtown Beaumont with his father-in-law Drury Weems as superintendent of production for what would become Browning rifles and cannons under license from Colt Firearms Company. With over 2,000 employees manufacturing firearms including 775 handguns between 1845 and 1865, rifle production became one of Beaumont’s leading industries during that time period also becoming home to many millionaires through their success in this industry such as Wernher von Braun who cofounded American astronauts with Goddard Space Flight Center; Samuel Morse who invented photography; J.P Handy who developed knees (the first electrically powered moving knee); Edwin Lathrop Brown who invented hydraulic fracturing; and Harvey Mudd who created Humble Oil which began production in 1978 just outside town limits today known as Midland Energy Field just south of IH 35W exit off IH 35E
