Beaumont is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Beaumont-Port Arthur River. The population was 116,817 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Texas and second largest city in Texas after Austin. The first European settlers to what is now Beaumont were French colonists who arrived in 1718. The area that would become Beaumont was part of the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803, and General Antonio López de Santa Anna built Fort San Jacinto on a bluff overlooking the river in 1819 to prevent American traders from penetrating into Mexican territory along the Gulf Coast. Beaumont's early growth came from its location near two major railroads: Houston and Galveston Railway Company line #1 (now called I-35) ran through downtown and connect with Joplin, Missouri; while Galveston Railway Company line #2 went northeast along an arm of Lake Ponchez before connecting with Port Arthur Railroad just south of town center. This created a trade corridor which served as a key factor for growth within the town beginning in the late 1800s. In 1909, two young men by the name of Edmond Mercier and Wilbur Hargrave founded their own oil company based out of Beaumont – Mercier Oil & Refining Co., which became one of America’s leading producers of gasoline and other fuel products until it merged with ConocoPhillips Corporation in 1978. In addition to providing local jobs during World War II when production soared due to patriotic sentiment surrounding Victory over Japan, mercantile activity also helped spur development around Beaumont during this time period including new retail stores such as Sam’s Club (later Sears) opening locations throughout town beginning around 1920; professional athletes such as Lou Gehrig playing baseball or football at Elmira High School starting around 1930; construction projects such as Interstate 10 being constructed across town beginning about 1940; Beaumont becoming home to both Baylor University (founded 1902) and Rice University (founded 1900). The post-World War II boom accelerated following passage of The New Deal via President Franklin D Roosevelt's National Recovery Administration programs that encouraged businesses to expand their production domestically rather than export goods they did not want or couldn't compete against abroad - which led directly to increased job opportunities for local residents during this time period as well as tax cuts given impetus by President Harry S Truman during his final year in office - bringing prosperity back to much rural areas nationwide following years of economic stagnation caused by war-related austerity measures implemented by prior administrations. Beaumont, Texas is a city located in the US state of Texas. The population was 187 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-The Woodlands–San Antonio metropolitan area. Beaumont was founded in 1871 by American Civil War veteran General James Fenton and his wife Lady Sarah Todd Lincoln as an agricultural community on the banks of the Trinity River. In 1865, Beaumont became one of the original municipalities in Travis County when it was created from parts of McLennan and Bastrop counties. In 1870, Beaumont had a population of just over 100 people and grew rapidly thanks to its connections to Houston and other centralized railroads. The town's economy relied heavily on cotton farming and cattle ranching until after World War I when oil exploration began to take hold in central Texas. With more than 1,000 residents by 1930, Beaumont experienced rapid growth during the early years of oil production but by 1940 it had fallen behind Houston due to competition from new energy sources such as natural gas and nuclear power plants. However, with advances in technology including fracking (the process of extracting oil from shale formations), Beaumont has seen significant growth since then as its downtown begins to gentrify again following a series of renovations spearheaded by Mayor Steve Adler. Today, Beaumont is an important center for education and industry with several high-tech companies based within its boundaries; major employers include Southern Bell Mobility Company (SBC) headquarters near downtown, Halliburton Co., Tyson Foods Inc., Dow Chemical Co., ChevronTexaco Inc., Magellan Road Systems LLC and many others. Additionally, recent efforts have been made to revive downtown beauregard which has seen some restoration work completed such as adding new businesses including NoodleBurger & Beer House among others
Beaumont was founded in 1836 by Captain James Hogg, a Scottish fur-trader. The first post office was established in Beaumont in 1837. In 1849, the town became an independent county and was named for General Stephen Austin. The city of Beaumont was chartered in 1865 and grew rapidly due to its location near the San Antonio River. Beaumont's annexation by Houston in 1889 led to a decline in economic fortunes until the arrival of automobiles and other technology changed business conditions. A new downtown district was built around the turn of the century and growth resumed. In 2001, Beaumont became one of Texas' 50 cities designated as being "climate vulnerable."
