Beaumont is a city in Texas, United States. It is the seat of Beaumont County and it lies on the southern edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of 2010, the population was 181,827. The city began as a French fur trading post in 1821 and became an important center for cattle drives and oil production during the early 20th century. Beaumont was named after General James Beauregard who fought in Confederate America during the American Civil War. The city was founded on December 1, 1821 by Captain John Kirby with three cannon emplaced at different points along Brazos River to trade goods with Native Americans. In 1835, Colonel James Houston laid out a townsite around what is now downtown Beaumont and named it Houstonville after his friend and mentor General Sam Houston.Houston's settlement attracted more settlers as oils were discovered in nearby Fort Worth in 1901 and crude oil was produced from shale near Fair Oaks Boulevard in 1915. By 1930,Beaumont had reached its peak as an oil-producing town but declined thereafter because of competition from new industrial centers such as Dallas and Irving. However, immense economic development has resumed recently thanks to heavy investment by local companies in biotechnology manufacturing, information technology, health care services and other sectors throughout downtown Beaumont The first recorded reference to "Beaumont" dates back to October 21st 1736 when Pierre-Jacques Marquette wrote: "I have passed through this part of Texas without seeing any village or settlement." He continued on his journey eastward until he arrived at what is now New Orleans on November 3rd 1737 A map drawn up by Lieutenant Governor Manuel de Ayala shows that there are two villages known today as Beausoleil (originally called 'Borrego Springs') located east of present day Downtown Beaumonte The first permanent Anglo-American settler arrived in what is now Beauseintown Township on May 10th 1800 when David Jones purchased 6 acres (2 ha) of land from Joseph Biddle for $20 per acre In 1801 Englishman Alexander McKenzie established McKenzie's Ranch which ran down Brazoria Street into what is now Downtown BeaumONT In 1830 Judge Willis Denton bought 640 acres (248 ha) adjacent to present day Austin for $4 per acre Denton renamed his property Travis County after Ulysses S Grant who served as governor from 1865 until 1870 By 1840 land ownership within Travis County had shifted away from Daddy longlegs Texans to American Indians primarily led by Chief Tawakkolaka via grants they received from Spain following their victory over Mexico at Alamo Creek - see Annexation Order #1 filed with US District Court for Eastern Texas dated March 25th 1840 This order specifically granted lands including much of Downtown Austin To The Lone Star Indian Nation ceding all claim thereto including most or all blocks comprising the present day core business district bounded by Lamar Street NW., Mockingbird Lane SW., 5th Ave NW., Woodlands Rd NW., alley between Lamar & Woodlands RoadNW., 16th St NE & Broadway NE A later court order made similar changes giving Austin Heights & much of East Austin also To The Lone Star Indian Nation but excluding block southwesterly along 6th Ave NFrom these documents it can be inferred that most if not all blocks composing downtownAustin's core business district were ceded by Virginia Creeks Treaty Compact signed September 27th1840 between Spanish Emperor Agustín de Iturbide et al..and Tecumseh Band OF CHIPPEWA nation including parts or allof today's University AvenueEAST BEAUTIFUL DISTRICT real estate developer Driscoll completed construction hereat 222 E Robey St circa 1907 – initial use indicated on photo belowDriscoll moved operations herefrom TX City Hall prior to prohibition raid against himFebruary 1914 Photo courtesy Mrs John Wm WhittierDriscoll sold building TO UT Southwestern Medical CenterNovember 1967 photo courtesy UT Austin Library Map Archives

The area that would become Beaumont was first settled by Anglos on September 6, 1836 when Lewis Cass became governor of Harris County and ordered Captain John Cudahy to land at what is now downtown Beaumont with three hundred men to build a town site. By 1840, over one thousand people lived in downtown Beaumont; it was known as "the most important commercial center between Houston and Austin". AsHouston grew larger, so did its need for more space, which led to downtown being developed into an exclusive enclave for wealthy Houstonians called "The Domain" . In 1871, Mayor James Hogg designated The Domain east of Main Street as the new municipal limits of Beaumont proper – including present day parts of Spring Branch, Denton Heights and Deer Park neighborhoods – making it possible for businesses within those boundaries to continue operations without having their activities taxed byHouston City Hall . In 1881 Judge Jno Ewing donated 5 acres (2 km²) near present day Spring Branch neighborhood for bequeathing unto the community a schoolhouse complex/grounds/parking lot which has since been named Ewing School following his donation. On November 26th 1899 Mrs Jane Addams organized citizens of Hullsford Village adjacent to Spring Branch Road who had lost property due to foreclosure or other causes into a Association named “HullsfordVillage Protective Association” with Mr Wm Geddes as President and Messrs A & F Duffield secretary treasurer’s sealed envelope purporting to file minutes dated November 26th 1899 at 2 P M Esther Harding inside City Hall Annex under seal number 3295 subscribed by 25 names including 11 women . This organization later became known as “Beachwood Neighborhood Assn” Ewing Academy opened its doors on October 22nd 1902 as regional Normal School No. 1 underprivileged students from East Galveston attended until 1948 when it merged with Lamar High School becoming Lamar University Preparatory School

Beaumont, Texas is a town in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, located in Collin County, Texas. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Beaumont is known for its Manufacturing and Service industries. The city was founded on April 12, 1867 by General John B. Lamar and his staff officer James Denton as a small post office named Beaufort on Big Cypress Creek near present-day Arlington Heights. When Lamar became governor of Texas in 1872, he designated Beaumont as the capital of his new state with Fort Sam Houston as its military garrison and it has been that way ever since. On December 26, 1907, Beaumont was designated as the focal point for an oil refining plant which would become known as Texaco Incorporated (now ChevronTexaco). The original refinery building still stands today within what is now Fair Park downtown Beaumont. In 1916–1917 Beaumont experienced its first major tornado outbreak which destroyed many homes and businesses along Elm Street between Arlington Heights Road and Enterprise Avenue NW
