In 1845 a group of Englishmen led by Colonel James Bowie landed at what is now Port Arthur and started trading with Native Americans; this began what would be known as "Texas Land Company" development that would later lead to Texans settling around Port Arthur including Austin and Waco. In 1850 Captain John Skelton founded Fort Stockton on Lake Travis south of today's downtown Beaumont; this became Fort Worth about two years later when Walker County was organized from parts oftxlege counties east of Travis River (today's Arlington County). On November 3rd, 1860 Richardson Post No. 553 became one of 102 Dallas posts established during Reconstruction following America's Civil War; this made Beaumont one of Dallas' original cities along with Arlington Heights and Irving. From 1865 until 1907 most businesses were housed within three blocks bounded by 4th Street NW to the north (now Streetsboro), 6th Street NW to the west (now I-30), 9th Street SW (now Elmendorf Road), and 12th Street NE (now University Boulevard). During World War II much activity took place within Fort Worth due to Army barracks being constructed there such as Love Field which served as headquarters for Air Force units conducting combat air refueling operations over Japan during World War II; these operations were also responsible for bringing American troops into proximity range artillery fire opening up numerous avenues for general Blitzkrieg warfare against Japanese targets using strategic bombing raids combined with HUKI precision fires - some estimates put Japanese losses at up to 90% while American losses were only 10%. With war ending came economic stability followed by population growth which has continued into today’s era characterized by high housing prices relativeto wage levels across all US metropolitan areas – making Beaumont one of North America’s most expensive cities per capita even though its GDP per capita remains below average compared to other major US metropolises such as New York City or Los Angeles

Beaumont was founded byodus of the Beaumontoups family in 1836. It became a city in 1872, and was named for General James B. Beaumont who fought in the Mexican-American War. The city has been called the "Gateway to Texas" because it is located on the route between Austin and Dallas. The area now known as downtown Beaumont features a number of businesses and services that have helped it become one of the most successful cities in Texas. The first settler in what would later be Beaumont was Johnathon Dickinson who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin near present day Lamar Boulevard and Bowie Street. By 1840, other settlers had arrived, including Moses Wilkinson and his brother-in-law Samuel Lubbock. They built several homes on land that would eventually become downtown Beaumont. In 1845, Nashville lawyer Levi Coffin bought three acres of land at what is now First Avenue and Bowie Street from Andrew Jackson Turner for $160 dollars. After purchasing the land, Coffin donated it to the townspeople for use as a public square or market square which they called "Coffin Square." The cornerstone for this building was laid on February 2nd, 1846 by Mayor James Pogue (1812-1892). In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Texas with an army numbering over 100,000 men under General Jubal Early; however, early skirmishes against Union forces thwarted any major offensive plans by Ewell's force. As a result, little damage was done to either side during the battle which took place around 3 p..m., April 6th 1865 at Fort Worth about 25 miles northwest of Beaumont; however damages done to civilian populations amount to well into millions of dollars according to historian David Hackett Fischer: "From April 6th until 9th 1865 (the day after Fort Worth fell), registered casualties totaled 154 killed (including Ewell himself) plus an unknown number wounded or missing... More than 1 million people were effected by Union troops simply by marching through their towns." Two years later on November 5th 1870 when Confederate general Joseph Johnston ordered his army all around Texas open up reserves just before their planned attack on Houston he described his orders thusly: "I propose ...to march my entire command through central Texas tomorrow night without firing a shot... I do not seek extermination but annihilation". However these plans never came true as Johnston's army commander Edwin Mudge decided against launching such an operation due to logistical difficulties only hours before its scheduled execution; instead he marched his forces northward towards San Antonio where they engaged Ulysses S Grant's Army at Palo Alto Bridge resulting in more than 60 percent loss for Johnston's force while Grant emerged victorious with minor losses overalls along the way according to historical sources today[]. One possible reason why Johnston abandoned these plans may have been due to local militia leader JF Bourke being able to block any major Confederate advance southward into Texan soil until lateMay 1870 having organized approximately 30 000 Texans acting under his command ready should such an event occur[]. Also another possibility could be that Johnston had reservations about leading such large numbers of troops into frontal combat against Grant whom had numerous advantages both numerically and militarily[]. Whatever the case may be there can be no doubt that Johnston made poor strategic decisions during this crucial time period within America’s civil war era".
