On November 5, 1881, Beaumont was the site of one of the bloodiest gun battles in Texas history. A force of Confederate cavalry and infantry fought against a large Union force commanded by General George Meade. The battle lasted almost three days and resulted in more than 100 casualties on both sides. In 1891, Beaumont became the first municipally-owned city in Texas.
Beaumont is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, with a population of 158,878 as of 2018. It is the county seat for Beaumont County and was founded in 1867. The city was named after General James Austin Beaumont (1795–1865), an American general who fought in the Mexican War and the American Civil War. The area now comprising Beaumont had been inhabited by another Native American tribe, the Tejas, since at least 1625 AD. In 1836, landowner Anglo-Texan William Pemberton divided what would become Beaumont into two townships; one for African Americans and one for whites. The town meeting that created both beaver dam and platted out streets demonstrated white supremacy when it voted to name only African Americans "Beausoleil" (meaning "Beautiful"), while white citizens were given anglicized names such as "Bryan", "Farragut" and "Houston". In 1865, Houston became the capital of Texas following its annexation by Mexico from California. A streetcar system was installed in Beaumont in 1872 to provide transportation between Houston and other parts of Texas; this led to increased development within the city limits, including an increase in prostitution which attracted German immigrants to work on construction projects nearby during World War I. After prohibition took effect in America following ratification of the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 5, 1920—the first amendment prohibiting alcohol—the demand for Prohibition-era liquor increased in Beaumont so much so that businesses near Main Street called themselves Temperance Halls because they could not sell any alcohol without getting raided by law enforcement officers wielding shotguns! A new brewery opened up next door on Franklin Street called Lone Star Brewery which produced Ship Channel Stout until 1978 when it closed due to marketing issues surrounding craft beer being associated with luxury hotels rather than lower-middle class neighborhoods like Beaumont where most people consumed beer at home or bought it from convenience stores along Interstate 10. That same year also saw another local brewery open up called The Dog House Brewery which produced a type of lager known as Precious Mineral designated for use by women only because no other breweries offered it at that time outside Waller County; this too closed relatively quickly due to competition from bigger breweries starting up around Dallas/Fort Worth area during those years having access to federal brewing appropriations that went unallocated at that time meaning smaller brewers couldn't compete financially like they do today without subsidies - making them vulnerable to closure even if their product wasn't really bad). Beaumont was founded by a group of Texans in 1836 as the first permanent settlement in what is now Texas. The town's name is derived from a royal grant from Mexico to General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The grant was made on the night of Christmas Eve, 1835, and named for Beaumont, England (then part of Great Britain). Santa Anna and his army invaded Texas during the Mexican-American War and sacked Beaumont on December 25, 1835. After the war ended, Santa Anna gave Beaumont to Major José Joaquín Cámpora for development as a military garrison. The early years of Beaumont were tough; it was known as one of the most difficult towns in Texas to get through due to its lack of infrastructure such as water and sewage systems. Still, over time it grew into one of the most successful small towns in Texas. It became an agricultural center with cattle farming and textile production becoming mainstay industries. In 1916, Beaumont hosted the first international exposition at which Texaco displayed its products throughout North America. After World War II, however, things changed for Beaumont when oil discoveries took off across North America. This led to more businesses opening up in town and faster growth rates followed. By 1990, Beaumont had reached its current size with more than 100 businesses employing over 4500 people. The city has seen significant progress since then including becoming home to several high-tech companies and growing entertainment options such as music concerts and art exhibitions
