On October 20, 1844, Captain John Broughton anchored his whaling ship "Broughton's Hope" off shore from what is now downtown Beaumont when he discovered oil wells offshore—the discovery ushered in what would be one of America's leading petroleum industries! When World War II started it became clear that more Americans were needed for military service so Beaumont drafted more than its share! The war also led to increased housing production as people moved into downtown areas vacated by soldiers or refugees. Beaumont is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Beaumont was founded in 1872 by Captain John Beaumont and his family as a small trading post on the Sabine River near present-day Midland. In 1882, Captain Beaumont donated land to become what is now downtown Beaumont. Downtown became the commercial and cultural center of Beaumont as well as its political and economic heart when it was annexed by Houston in 1901. In 1915, Mayor James A. White dedicated the first section of Interstate 10 within city limits, which bisected downtown from north to south. At that time, Houston controlled most of Midland County and had no need for a second city on its southern border; however, Mayor White's dedication helped to resurrect downtown Beaumont as an important commuter hub for both cities despite historical conflict between them over control of Sabine River Bridge (now I-10) and other infrastructure issues such as water crossings. Downtown business district growth continued into the 1950s with annexation of adjacent suburbs such as Pearland and Baytown; however, during this time downtown experienced significant decline due to increased suburban development around it without corresponding investment in downtown businesses or infrastructure upkeep which exacerbated traffic congestion and loss of jobs to new suburbs after World War II ended%. Despite this decline, many people still considered downtown be one of the most vibrant sections of town because much remained unchanged from pre-war days including Merchantstrade Plaza - home to several large retailers including Sears & Roebuck - two blocks east along Main Street where Drury served coffee until 1978 before moving across 11th Street into its own building (later known as City Hall). During Hurricane Ike in 2008%, damage done to some aspects of Downtown led some residents protests against what they saw as neglect by elected officials who claimed that rebuilding would cost more than just taking down old structures without replacing them with up-to-date technology like fiber optic cables rather than repairing/replacing basic features like gutters etcetera while also failing to fund mitigation measures such as storm drainage systems etcetera creating a three story hole in lower ground level sidewalk right next door directly above street intersection providing direct access point for rainwater runoff onto property below causing extensive seepage thru concrete wall abutting alley adjacent thereto through basement resulting in major flooding followed by weeks long closure caused $200K estimate repair costs less then half that amount Downtown redevelopment has resumed since then with various investments such as resurfacing streetscape including installation new sidewalks/gutter installs replacement historic light fixtures/cords restored brick sidewalk repairs grates/pipes replaced sandblasting removed remaining paint applied backlight restoration completed
