After Union troops overran much ofTexas during the American Civil War due to their lack of supplies and manpower, Commodore Perry sent Brigadier General James Wirt Davis (later Governor of Texas) with a force under Colonel Augustus Kelley towards Austin on October 16, 1874 to demand reparations from Santa Anna for what were then considered war crimes - such as burning towns and destroying crops - committed by Texan forces while pursuing Mexican general Miguel Aliño Zavala across Central Texas six days earlier on October 13th into Canyonlands National Park near present day Richmond (Cañon City). On November 6th1874 US Marines landed at Menard's Wharf along Buffalo Bayou just east of downtown Beaumont after being transported there aboard USS Constitutionvia steamer "Arkansas". A few weeks later on December 10th Davis returned ashore with 400 men including 100 cavalrymen under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer Jr., Commander US Cavalry Corps Southwest Pacific Expedition 1865-1868 when he burned down several Adobe Walls destroyed homes and herded cattle withinnineteen miles (30 km) southeast ofBeaumont proper during what came to be called Curwood Massacre; however most locals believe these events actually took place east adjacentto Clear Fork Creek where some buildings still stand today but are used as part of Houston’s Harris County government office complex known locally as Fairview Tower which overlooks I-10/I-45 junction two miles southwest Of downtown Houston
