Baytown is located on the Gulf of Mexico near Houston and its namesake bay, and it contains maritime history dating back to 1837 when Captain George Fenton sailed his brigantine Baytown into Galveston Bay for trade with Spanish colonists. The town's downtown includes a replica of the ancient Mayan temple known as "The Temple of Maya". Baytown has been settled by people from all over Texas since pre-historic times. The first residents were Indians who hunted and gathered their food in the local region. In 1835, Spanish settlers founded San Fernando de los Baños (nowHouston) on land that now makes up portions of Baytown and Sugar Land. They named their new community San Antonio de Padua after Staita del Pino (died 1792), an eighteenth century viceroy who defended Mexican interests in East Texas against American forces under General Sam Houston during the Texan Revolution. By 1840, San Antonio had become a major port on the Gulf Coast serving both European traders and slave traders from south Louisiana and Arkansas; consequently, there was much competition for resources among early settlers in what would become Baytown including claims to nearly every inch of land within its boundaries today save one stretch along Buffalo Bayou which remains unclaimed. In 1847, James Kenedy established Kenedy’s Landing on Buffalo Bayou which became one of the largest cotton plantations in America before emancipation began efforts to free slaves in 1865 following Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation effectively ending slavery throughout most of America including Texas except for Galveston where it continued until 1870 due to lack of infrastructure north of Houston while southernmost areas remained enslaved until well into Reconstruction era. As inland cotton production increased throughout Great Britain following Boer War victory at Zand River some families developed cotton plantations near present day Grand Prairie providing natural water supplies necessary for irrigation while others transported goods down Buffalo Bayou by barge or steamboats resulting in development around Greenspoint including Clear Lake Park & Preserve just east of present day downtown

Baytown, Texas is a small town located in Waller County, Texas. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. Baytown is one of the oldest towns in Waller County and was founded in 1852. It is named after James Fenton Bayou, which empties into the Trinity River near present-day Baytown. The early settlers were Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in search of land to farm. In 1859, John Sibley became the first postmaster of Baytown and served until 1865. He also built the first store in Baytown. By 1870, some residents had started to build permanent homes and businesses in what is now downtown Baytown. In 1872, John Jarratt founded Jarratt & Company lumberyards on what are now north Main Street and West Second Street east of College Avenue. From here he began shipping logs downriver to be processed into lumber for local buildings and bridges. By 1888, Jarratt & Company had become one of the largest lumber companies in Texas with mills at San Antonio (later renamed Austin), Lubbock, Commerce City (now Corpus Christi), Midland (now Midland Heights), Temple Hills (now Temple University) and Waco (later renamed Wichita Falls). In 1915, Jarrartt died suddenly at his home nearpresent-day Houston while attending a convention of shareholders for his company. His widow continued running her business until her death in 1931; however, she left behind a legacy that has helped support many important aspects of Baytown's history including its annual Oktoberfest celebration which draws over 1 million people to downtown Baytown each year!
