In 1940 Smith & Wesson merged with Remington Arms Company to form Springfield Armory Company. The H&R Block Firearms Corporation continued manufacturing handguns until it closed in 1978.
Baytown is a town in Waller County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Baytown is located on the lower Rio Grande River and has a total area of 10 square miles (27 km2). The name "Baytown" comes from Spanish for "bayou". In 1836, settlers named their community San Antonio de Padua after St. Anthony of Padua, who had visited them during their journey up the river. The name change came about because when they built a post office near present-day downtown Baytown they decided to call it San Antonio instead of Santa Anna because that's where Padua was located east of Mexico City at that time. In 1859, General Sam Houston donated land to build the first school in Baytown which became known as New High School. On November 1, 1867, Baytown residents voted to secede from Waller County and become an independent municipality under the new Constitution of Texas. The first municipal election was held on November 3 and New High School served as polling place for local elections until annexation into Austin in 1901. During World War II almost all manufacturing within one mile radius ceased due to bombings by Japanese forces; however many small businesses continued operations such as feed mills and butter production out of homes or barns until war ended six months later without any damage done to those businesses nor loss of jobs or revenue. Baytown experienced its heyday during Prohibition when many breweries were open including Alamo Drafthouse which still operates today as a bar/restaurant with multiple locations throughout Texas and Mexico while also owning an extensive distillery across the border in Veracruzán Colorado Territory

The city's rich history began with its founding by pioneers who set out from San Antonio in 1854 for a new home on the Brazos River. They were met at bay by Chief Manuel Carrera and his party of Plains Indians and were served by him and his brother-in-law Juan Bautista Martinez as they made their way northward into what is now Harris County. After landing on the Brazos River, these first settlers built homes around a small landing where they named their town "Baytown." In 1865, Baytown became an independent municipality when it seceded from San Antonio and joined other municipalities within Harris County in order to form a more powerful political entity. In 1870, Baytown added two square miles (5 km2) of land along FM 2895 south of Houston to its boundaries making it one of the mostdeveloped areas east of Austin at that time. This area later became known as League City and still contains some reminders of early pioneer life such as Pioneer Cemetery and Pioneer Hall Museum which are located there today. In 1928, Baytown annexed League City to increase its population by almost 20% due to increased agricultural production brought about by oil exploration operations conducted there during that decade. AsHouston grew rapidly throughout the 1930s and 1940s, so did Baytown; however, growth ceased abruptly during World War II until postwar development resumed with completion of Interstate 55 which bypassed downtown Baytown limits upstream from IH-10 (the present day 610 Loop). Today’s downtown has been largely unchanged since then except for renovations completed in 2006 including installation of nearly all new streetlights while also updating public works facilities like water mains and sewers - all without removing any historical buildings or artifacts! As Houston continued to grow rapidly throughout the 21st century – reaching over 1 million residents by 2000 – so too didBaytown; however growth ceased suddenly during Hurricane Harvey’s landfall on September 25th 2017 leaving much destruction behind including loss of many historic structures including Pioneer Cemetery which sat abandoned for months until emergency crews arrived! The city quickly rebuilt following Harvey but much work remains yet to be done especially due to lackadaisical attitude towards historical preservation among elected officials who have instead chosen financial gain over ensuring that our city’s past is fully remembered!
