Baytown, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas and has a population of over 100,000 people. It is the county seat for Tarrant County and was founded on November 3, 1873 by cattle ranchers led by Colonel James W. Hogg. The city became an agricultural center after the discovery of oil in 1901. Baytown was named for John Fayette Bayless, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was an important figure in Texan independence movement. The first self-defense weapons were designed to protect cattle ranchers from Indian attacks with handguns or rifles that fired lead ballistics rounds instead of explosive shells. In 1907, firearms manufacturer Remington commenced production of shotguns based on designs patented by George Epps that could be used as unarmed personal defense weapons with barrels measuring up to 26 inches (66 cm). Baytown, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Harris County. The population was 27,508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–Galveston–Houston metropolitan area. Baytown was founded in 1836 by veterans of the Mexican-American War and their families as a small town on Galveston Island in Galveston Bay. The island had been leased from Spain and it was not until after Mexico's independence that Europeans began to explore it, which led to its naming as "Baytown" by General James Longstreet during his stay there in 1848. The first post office called "Baytown" was established in 1836, but no records remain to support this claim; likely it was named for Captain James Fenton who had commandeered the island from Spanish authorities and named it "Galveston". In 1851, Captain John Sutherland opened a trading post at what is now known as Plantation Road near present day downtown Baytown; this became known as Sutherlandsville after him. By 1870, Baytown had grown sufficiently that a new courthouse and jail were built on Main Street between Lamar Boulevard (now FM 1960) and 10th Street SW. In 1886, Texas annexation resulted in the town becoming an official municipality; under its new charter, Baytown voted to become a separate entity from Harris County with its own government headed by mayor and city council members instead of commissioners appointed by the county executive. However, many aspects of life continued to be conducted within the confines of Harris County until 1993 when amalgamation with Houston completed across all governmental entities within Houston limited both cities' autonomy somewhat - though they retain their respective namesakes (eighth street in downtown San Antonio being renamed State Highway 281). Baytown is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. The city was founded by Stephen Austin on December 15, 1836 and named for Captain James Baynton of HMS Beagle fame. The original town site was about 8 miles (13 km) south of present-day Baytown and 2 miles (3 km) east of the then unincorporated community of Pecos. It became a part of San Antonio on November 30, 1856. The first post office in Baytown opened on March 12, 1837. In 1840, the Texan General Sam Houston built a salt works here to produce salt for export to Mexico. By 1850, when Houston's son and successor as governor of Texas George Bexar moved his capital from Houston to Galveston Island in order to take advantage of good transportation connections between Galveston and Mexico City through New Orleans instead of having it located within San Antonio County limits encouraged settlement around the new town site including the founding of what later became known as East Baytown. In 1860–1861 Confederate forces burned down much of East Baytown during their attempt to suppress voting in Unionist areas north of San Antonio; however most residents were able to rebuild quickly with help from local friends and neighbors who donated materials and labor. The burnings were eventually resolved by an intercession by General Robert Ewell which allowed most buildings not destroyed to be rebuilt without loss or damage while still allowing access to public education until 1861 when all schools were closed due to Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War which ended with slavery abolished across America). In 1876 Mayor John Waddell proposed that Baytown become one municipality but this proposal met stiff resistance from some citizens because they saw it as an encroachment upon their individual rights as well as fears that annexation would bring more people into what had been considered their backyard since they had helped create it! A referendum vote taken two years later demonstrated overwhelming support for incorporation into a new municipal government with Waddell becoming mayor Pro Tempore; he served until 1880 when he was succeeded by Jno Harkins who served until 1886 when he too resigned after being elected lieutenant governor over objections from conservatives in his own Republican Party faction led by Edward Everett Kustoff Sr.. On May 1st 1886 Mayor Harkins established what became known as "The First Municipal Court" - which still exists today - effective date unknown but probably before October 1st 1886 under name "First Municipal District Courts". On July 9th 1888 Commissioners Fenton & Slaughter acquired all necessary land eastward from Houston Street along US 281 (now I-10) extending into present day Baytown creating baytown areanew centercity! This event marked beginningofgrowthofBayTownCity! Lloyd Wright designed its first building - now City Hall - here on Main Street in 1886.. After World War II many businesses moved out west including Gulf Oil Company headquarters which occupied former Methodist church building on Elm Street NW corner de la Concepcion Avenue NE now usedforfirefightersstation . Other notable businesses included Sock Exchange & Newsstands operated outriggerboat Simpson Dock dock side wharfuntil shut downduetocoastalmudslidein2000

After the war ended, Baytown grew even more rapidly as it became one of the most prosperous towns in Texas.
