In 1881, two years after Houston's death, General Sam Bowie became governor of Texas and ordered all military posts throughout the state be renamed for their departing governors- including Bowie's Fort Bend County seat of Stonewall Jackson (now Tomball). In addition to Bowie's Fort Bend County seat, other new towns were founded around this time in parts of Brazoria and Monterrey counties: Humble (opened in 1883), Port Arthur (opened in 1886), Clearwater (1889), Comfort (1892), Angleton (1894) and Kirbyville (1900). The first gas station in Baytown was established on Main Street by Jiffy Lube Company founder John Denton in 1913. Today, ChevronTexaco operates a Shell station on Main Street across from the former GAS station which closed its doors service on October 1st 2009 due to environmental concerns over drilling operations nearby which have caused salt water intrusion into groundwater reserves beneath Baytown dating back to the 1920s!
