Baytown, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the banks of Trinity River. The population was 103,362 as of the 2010 census. In 1857, Baytown became an initial capital of new Mexican State Coahuila y Tejas when it was established following Mexico's independence from Spain. That same year saw enactment by Congress of the Act for Establishing Commerce with Foreign Countries - known today as the Tariff Act - which opened up trade with Mexico for Texans and others interested therein without prior commercial arrangements being made with Mexican officials or merchants in New York City or other eastern trading centers at that time.
