It was founded on the banks of the Balcones River by Texans who came from Mexico in 1836. The city was named after Baytown, a small town in Galveston County, Texas. In 1879, an act passed by the Texas Legislature designated Baytown as part of the newly formed municipality of San Antonio de Bexar. By 1890 Baytown had reached its peak with a population of 4,000 people and 100 businesses.
