Baytown is a city in southern Texas, on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Baytown is located in District 9 of Galveston County and is part of the Houston metropolitan area. Its proximity to Houston makes it an important commercial center for that city as well as for its adjacent counties. The first humans to live in what is now Baytown were Paleo-Indians who migrated from central Mexico overland in small groups about 12,000 years ago. They built villages near what is now downtown Baytown and other sites along the riverbank. By 1000 BC, people living around present-day Baytown had developed pottery, stone tools and significant trade with others in Southeast Asia, South America and Europe. In 1836 David Gadsden founded Gadsden City on a bluff overlooking Buffalo Bayou north of town. That year he named his new settlement after General Andrew Jackson who had conquered Alabama two years earlier during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). Gadsden's choice of name seems inspired by nearby Clear Lake which he saw as "a body of water clear as crystal" when he disembarked his vessel there after leading a troop charge against Mexican troops at San Jacinto Creek on October 16, 1835. In 1839 Gadsden sold his holdings to John Denton who erected a wharf and began shipping goods down Buffalo Bayou for shipment upriver to Galveston Island where colonists could purchase rice from Native Americans and build homes. The salt industry soon became important in developing this region; early salt pans were discovered near present-day downtown Baytown and later inland around present-day Midway Airport.. In 1840 Denton bought land adjoining Clearlake east of Buffalo Bayou for $150 per acre ($6 million today) - oneofthelargest such purchases made by an American individual during that era.. From here Saltillo began production of white salt while local blacksmiths fashioned red leather saddles and harnesses from buffalo hides.. The growth of this industry led to development along Buffalo Bayou including several brickyards,. Several large cotton plantations were also established along this creek throughout the 19th century before being supplanted by more diversified crops such as corn, wheat and soybeans which continue to be major economic drivers today.. Many prominent Texans made their homes here including Sam Houston (1793–1860), James Kline (1868–1932), George Westinghouse (1847–1937)and oilman Humble Oil Company founder Hunt Morgan (1863–1941). baytown texas

It was home to both United States Navy forces garrisoning shipyards in San Antonio and Army troops stationed at Camp Bowie. In 1945, Baytown was incorporated as a city under the new Austin County government system. The city has since experienced significant growth trends, experiencing a population increase of over 20% between 2000 and 2010 alone. This led to a decreased population density and an overall decrease in economic activity throughout most of Baytown's history.
