Baytown, Texas is a city in Baytown County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Baytown County. The city was founded in 1876 by members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as Fort Aransas. As a result of its location on the Gulf of Mexico between Galveston and Houston, it grew quickly into an important commerce center for both ports and for cotton production. In 1907, Baytown got its own post office and began to grow rapidly as a commercial center with several large factories and businesses that attracted manufacturers from all over the country to its expanding hometown economy. In 1916, Baytown became an independent municipality when it combined with neighboring Clear Lake to form Clearlake-Baytown Municipality. That year also saw the incorporation of nearby Beaumont as well. In 1949, Baytown merged with Houston to form the current City of Houston which continues to be one of America's most populous cities thanks in part to its vast oil industry - today's largest employer in Baytown - although some companies have moved away fromHouston over time (such as Continental Airlines).
