From its inception until 1957, Colt products were available at various local retailers throughout the area. The first gun battle in Baytown took place on September 26, 1846 when two volunteers from the Texas Rangers served as part of a contingent led by General Sam Houston to quell a local insurrection. The fight lasted three hours and ended with the Texans victorious. On October 14, 1846, Baytown was attacked by Mexicans who were using Confederate sympathizers as mounts. A skirmish ensued which ended with Mexican casualties and one Texan dead. On November 15, 1846, an even more significant engagement occurred when 8 Mexican bandits ambushed two wagon trains travelling through the town. Each side suffered heavy losses but theMexicans eventually retreated without achieving their objective. 2 days later, on November 17th, another pitched battle between 2 detachments of Texas Rangers and 100 Mexican guerrillas resulted in 12 Texan fatalities (10 of whom were killed by rifle fire) and 20 Mexican injuries including 4 dead horses. Mexican sources claim that they only lost 4 men while the Texan forces lost 13 people killed or wounded while sustaining no damage. The day following this engagement was marked by a truce that lasted until late December due to lack of effective military action between both sides
