In 1836, James Baytown married Sarah Dickinson, who had moved from Tennessee with her family to live in Texas. In 1840, following the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Mexicans living within 300 miles of San Antonio must leave or face military action. Some of these Texan patriots decided to take defensive measures with firearms including carrying pistols for protection during horseback raids into Mexico City. In 1847 an act known as the Stockton Act was passed which banned handguns in California due to concerns over potential insurrection by Mexican Americans living there at that time. This law led to increased gun violence throughout California as criminals began to arm themselves with handguns in order to protect themselves from future police officers or other residents who might try and enforce the law without proper justification. Following the passage of this bill local militias formed in response prefixing “gun” with an “e” because they were not authorized by state legislators or government officials like those behind the Stockton Act itself.
