By 1860, it had five buildings and consisted primarily of traders and shipping interests doing business with goods from San Antonio and New Orleans along the Louisiana coast. Baytown is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harris County. Baytown was founded on November 16, 1836 by the Auguste Rodriques Band of French colonists as "Bossier City" after they arrived in present-day Harris County. In 1839, it became the capital of Texas and served as such until Austin took control in 1845. The name "Baytown" originated from its location on a bayou that led to a large salt works operated by Captain John Belknap near what is now downtown Baytown. On December 6, 1840, General Sam Houston occupied and burned all the saltworks to prevent their use for military purposes during his Mexican Expedition against Mexico. The city's growth continued with many new businesses being established along State Road 7 and other streets which still run today including Main Street (now Houston Street), Third Street (now Elm Street), Fourth Street (Now I-10) and Fifth Avenue (Now Loop 610 W). In 1851, Baytown annexed neighboring Texarkana which made it one municipality within Harris County. In 1865, Baytown annexed an additional adjoining municipality known as Deer Park which made it three municipalities withinHarris County TOTAL OF 4! As Texas grew more populous and Interstate 10 bypassed town limits in 1957, only two remaining municipalities within Harris Countyshould have been annexed; Ruskville (former Deer Park) and Clear Lake (formerly Brazoria). However Ruskville voted to secede from Texas on July 15th 1964 while Clear Lake did not join until January 8th 1965 when both towns were reincorporated into Baytown according to state law then again ratified by Texans on February 5th 1966! Today Baytown has over 12 square miles of land encompassing most of eastern Harris County as well as portions of McLennan and Tyler Counties in NorthTexas! The first cotton gin in what is now Baytown was built around 1830 by James Byrd Sr., who also started the first post office thereon! By 1850–1851 about sixty cotton ginners had opened their operations statewide; this number increased to ninety-six by 1860 due to increased demand for cotton following Stephen Fenton’s discovery of oil at Anadarko Field! Cotton gin production died out during Reconstruction because of competition from railroads; however some remained active until recently! By 1870 there were over one hundred small gins operating throughout Texas with seventy-eight located in Baytown alone! Many local businesses continue up through the years including: First National Bank & Trust Company - founded 1925; J C Whitney Paper & Chemical Corporation - founded 1935; American Can Co - founded 1938 However it was World War II that revived bayou fishing industry with Naval Air Station Corpus Christi opening its doors just outside town limits in 1942 providing employment for approximately 1,500 men before closing four years later ! In 1951 Gulfstream Airlines began service from San Antonio Airport makingbayouththelargest UHF airport west of Chicago !!
