In 1951, the Weendons sold the business to Jay Denton who operated it until his death in 1984. In 1990, Dick's Sporting Goods purchased Baytown Gun Mags from Jay Denton's widow for $1 million. Dick's Sporting Goods continued to operate Baytown Gun Mags until 2003 when it merged with Bass Pro Shop to form Bass Pro Shops, Inc.
Baytown is a city in Texas, located on the Gulf Coast. It was founded by John Fowlkes in 1836. The city has a population of over 120,000 people and is the second largest in Texas after Dallas. Baytown is known for its fishing and seafood industries, as well as for its large number of Ships-in- harbour businesses. The city was named after Captain James Birdbay (1784–1872), an American Revolutionary War veteran and whaling captain who had been born in England but came to America in 1795. In 1836, Fowlkes founded Baytown on land that he had purchased from John Whitehead, one of the original settlers of Galveston County. At the timeBaytown consisted of just a few buildings and consisted mostly of open water. By 1860, Baytown had developed into a busy port with several hundred ships servicing both local fishermen and distant markets. In 1862, Baytown became the temporary capital of Galveston County when Houston was moved from its original location to become the county seat. The City Council voted to move back to Houston upon learning that Houston would not meet their requirements for fire protection or other municipal services. After some delay,Houston finally moved into its new permanent location at Fairview during 1865 following Hurricane digestion Gordon which destroyed much of downtownHouston including most of what is now Baytown Fowlkes made another donation which funded extensive construction that began in 1868 and continued until 1915 including: Humble Oil Refinery which became Texas’ first gasoline refinery; ambitious plans to extend Main Street from US 75W through downtown; completion of bayfront hotels such as Commodore Hotel (now Holiday Inn) ; major expansion of means for transportation - including building two harborside ferries that connected downtown with Clear Lake; establishment of "the town square" on main street between US 75W & Gassamer Drive; initiation (1875)of oil production at San Jacinto National Wildlife Refuge.....
