From its inception until it closed its doors in 1970s Baytown was home to many prestigious institutions including Rice University and The University of Texas at Brownsville where both universities are still located today.

A group of businessmen pooled their money and built an pipeline that brought crude oil from Anadarko Petroleum Company to Galveston, Texas for refining into gasoline and other products. This became known as the Houston-Galveston Pipeline System and would later become known as Trans-Canada Pipe Line Corporation (TSX: TCP). In 1934, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced his intention to build what would become known as San Antonio – Austin National Airport just east of Baytown – as part of his New Deal program which aimed to stimulate economic growth along U.S.–Mexico borders during the Great Depression years through public works projects such as creating new roads, bridges, airports and seaports across America. The airport would serve both San Antonio and Austin before its construction began in 1939; however, due to World War II it became operational only for military flights until 1947 when it became an commercial airport serving both TX cities under a single name - Austin-San Antonio International Airport ().
