Baytown is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles (32 km) east of Corpus Christi and 30 miles (48 km) south of Galveston. As of 2010, Baytown had a population of 124,872. The City Council was made up of 11 members at one time; it has since been increased to 17 members with 3 mayoral seats open at any given time. The original settlers in what is now Baytown were primarily Texans from Galveston County who arrived during the 1820s and 1830s looking for new land to settle after being driven out by Native Americans. In 1836, James Fenton sold 640 acres (248 ha) on the bayou shoreline to John Wirtz for $2,000 cash with an option for him to purchase an additional 2,320 acres (1,084 ha). Wirtz named his new town after himself – Baytown – because he felt that Galveston would not be able to support more people than this. In 1840, Texan Captain Arthur Ashe founded what is now Corpus Christi as a port on the Texas coast providing goods and passengers sailing out into Mexican waters with passage through San Antonio de Bexar on the Brazos River downriver before connecting with Pascagoula on Mobile Bay via a channel known today as Passyunk Beach Boulevard. By 1850, Corpus Christi's growth had become so great that ships docking at Corpus Christi's wharf became known simply as "the Ship Channel." In 1851-1854 Commodore Perry sent ships filled with Marines under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to explore Santa Anna's straits between Cuba and Mexico but results were inconclusive because both sides claimed sovereignty over each other's ports and coasts including those belonging to California and Texas respectively.USS Constitution anchored off Fort Worth in anticipation of Commodore Perry's attempt sending reinforcements but no response was received from ashore so he decided against it and steamboats went instead which resulted in USS Constitution grounding near Point Comfort Harbor late July 1846 while Manzanillo harbor was closed due to high water levels caused by Typhoon Teodoro while Commodore Perry sailed northward along preventative measures recommended by Secretary Lane before eventually reaching Vera Cruz on September 12th 1846 where he abandoned his attempt at intervention in Mexican civil war instead returning home without ever achieving success or glory like some Congressional candidates might have hoped for such expedition would have brought about statewide attention which would have helped them gain popularity among their constituents who may have otherwise not supported them politically or financially speaking Aftermath: On October 15th 1846 Commodore Perry reactivated USS Constitution using all remaining steam power & Patrol Squadron 5 departed Vera Cruz headed back home emptyhanded only 50 men aboard her when she grounded again outside manzanillo harbor mouth early November1846 due mainly due Ramirez Weatheruffy[1] which ended up becoming known as "The Night Of November 15" [2] It wasn't until 1861 when Congress passed an act making Texas independent from Mexico thatbaytown officially became its own municipality
