Baytown, Texas is an historical and cultural center in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located in Baytown County on the Houston Ship Channel and has been a major port for goods and passengers since the mid-19th century. It was founded by Americans Captain James Fannin and his crew during the Mexican–American War as a small Spanish fishing village named Nuevo Laredo on Corpus Christi Island (Larrea Atoll). The name "Baytown" was given to the town by Commodore John D. Stockton after he defeated Mexican forces at San Jacinto on October 16, 1836. The first American settlement in what is now Baytown was established in 1839 when David Hogg purchased land from José de la Luz y Menéndez, who had owned it since 1793. In 1840, James Fannin bought land from Manuel Ortiz, which included present-day Baytown. The town was incorporated on March 3, 1845, with its current boundaries defined by US Highway 6 and FM 1559A about two miles wide along both banks of the Houston Ship Channel. In 1861 Governor Anson Jones offered $10,000 to anyone who could build a fortification around present-day Baytown Harbor to prevent Confederate raiders from landing there while they attacked Galveston Harbor; only 1 person responded so no fortification was built. However, Fort White developed over time into one of the largest military installations in Texas history with cannons that could fire across the channel at Confederate ships anchored off Galveston Island; this caused some resentment among local citizens because they saw Fort White as their personal insult rather than an effective defence against Confederate attacks. During World War II many Marines were trained here before being deployed overseas; barracks were also used for airfield purposes after bayou Battle Mountain widened to allow for aviation use during World War II later becoming known as IHAF Airport today . The Navy also used various facilities here such as fuel storage tanks and Hangar #1 which housed destroyers USS Preble (DDG-7) - laid down 1941 - USS Kidd (DDG-8) - laid down 1942 - USS Wasp (AGC-4) - laid down 1945 - CVEs Escambia Valley 1943 - 1944 – USS Provence 1944 – 1945 Naval Air Station Nine Mile Point opened in 1946 using facilities originally belonging to Marine Corps Air Station Clearwater); but closed due to budget cuts three years later . According to 2010 census data most residents of Baytown are retirees or people working part time outside of their homes . Today it is home to many businesses including Sears Holdings Corporation's main store which formerly occupied much of downtown . There are also several schools within walking distance including Bayport High School & Intermediate School where students attend grades 7 through 12 ; Rice Consolidated Independent School District operates Dickinson Elementary school & Kuykendall Middle school across from Bayport High School ; Asbury Park Community College offers associate degrees through its Main Campus located just east of IHAF Airport near Enterprise Boulevard );and two hospitals: Memorial Hermann Health System & Alamo Heights Medical Center operate outpatients clinics inside Memorial Hermann Hospital while Methodist HealthCare operates one hospital outpatient clinic serving all Barker County areas plus urgent care services operated out side Alamo Heights Medical Center

Baytown is a town located in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 17,718 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Uvalde County. Baytown was founded in 1887 and incorporated as a town on November 3, 1912. The name "Baytown" comes from the Spanish word for "bayside." The first post office in Baytown was established on October 6, 1887, and remained open until it closed on January 14, 1906. At that time, the town had a population of just four people. The present-day Baytown was founded by George Waco with his brothers John and Edwin Waco. They selected the site of what is now Baytown because it had been surveyed by General Sam Houston as part of land grants he had given to his brother John. The townsite became available after Houston's death in 1836 and James Fenton bought the land from Houston's widow Judith Hogg for $2 per acre ($40 per km²). Fenton named their new town Baytown after San Antonio de Bexar (the old capital of Mexico), which he had visited while serving as governor of Texas during Floridians' war against Mexico in1846-48. He also renamed some streets statewide including Main Street (now Broadway) after Governors William Baugh (1863-1867), John Connally (1949-1953), Edward Stennis (1955-1959), Ross Perot (1974-1976) and Jimmy Carter (1977-1981). In 1912, when BayTown incorporated as a town, its population consisted only of Waco citizens George Dickson and Willis Price who were residents of Lubbock at the time; all other residents came from outlying rural areas within Uvalde County or neighboring Williamson County to join forces with Dickson and Price in founding what would become one of America's most important agricultural communities - an area fully devoted to farming since before railroads were invented! Today’s downtown district still contains remnants OF early bayou life – such as mossy logs used for building dams – while contemporary businesses dot this once sleepy corner: banks & convenience stores; diners & steak houses; health clinics & Walmart Supercenter; small business incubators… And there are still quite a few ranching activities taking place on many acres surrounding downtown…. In addition to its role as cultural center for much of central Texas (& adjacent counties!), BayTown has added significant dollars worth jobs over recent years: several thousand+ manufacturing jobs created here since 2002 alone….. From education providers like Baylor University’s international branch campus & TCU’s medical/health institute to insurance companies such State Farm Insurance Companies USA (& Rugee Insurance Company,) many businesses have found their home hereabouts….. This thriving community today owes much to two things: local ownership through incorporation &NRA support thru funding sources like Tax Increment Financing…. Today “Baytown” officially refers both physically TO THIS AREA (& culturally too!) but also Symbolically via its inclusion among numerous TX Locations featured on “Theros Traveler TV series” filmed HERE last year
