Baytown was founded in 1837 by Captain George W. Baytown and his wife, Eliza. The town grew rapidly from its initial population of only twelve people to over one hundred by the mid-19th century. By 1881, Baytown had become a principal city in the Texas Panhandle. In 1925, Baytown voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an open-air air museum and playground for all children of all ages. The city currently has over seventy museums and attractions within its boundaries.
