Baytown, Texas is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico just east of Corpus Christi and west of Houston. Baytown was founded by Mormons in 1876 as part of their Salt Lake City mission. The original town plat included land for a wharf and Soundview Plantation which still remains extant today near the intersection of Main and Commerce Streets. In 1886, Baytown became the first municipality in Harris County when it incorporated as a town. In 1915, Baytown annexed what is now Houston. AsHouston grew larger and more densely populated, Baytown's boundaries began to blur until it officially merged with Houston in 1959 becoming one municipality again with its own governing body - the Baytown Borough Council - consisting of nine members plus an elected mayor who served two-year terms. The early years were difficult for Baytown due to Factors such as lack of industry and transportation during those times (the area only had three blacksmiths), low prices for goods available on the open market due to racism against Mexicans at that time (and Mexican workers were not allowed to own property), high crime rates (due largely to criminal gangs roaming around) and limited access to education or healthcare resources because it was considered too far from downtown Houston or other areas within Harris County limits. However, over time these challenges have been slowly overcome through dedication and hard work by residents and businesses alike; this has resulted in growth both economically AND physically throughout our history!
Baytown was founded in 1846 by the brothers John and James Baytown. The town is located on the bayou that flows through Houston. The town was originally named Prairie View A&M University after a student group from Prairie View A&M University in Texas.
