The first post office was established in 1886 and continued operations until 1907 when it moved to San Antonio to be closer to Fort Sam Houston artillery batteries which were then garrisoned at Lackland Air Force Base. In 1915, Baytown became an incorporated city with its own government under Mayor J F Shea Jr.. In that year, Baytown played host to both world wars as major battlefields such as Little Big Horn took place there including one of the largest air battles in history when American planes battled Japanese fighters over USS Enterprise (CVN 71) off shore off Southern California on October 7th 1945 using fighter aircraft flown by Lieutenant Colonel Curtis LeMay who later became famous as the founder of America's security forces - United States Strategic Air Forces (USAAF).
