The first post office was established in 1840 in what is now downtown Baytown with only four residents living there at that time. The town rapidly grew thanks to its rich agricultural resources and its strategic location on the bayou between Houston and Sugar Land – making it an ideal place for shipbuilding, fishing, shipping and commerce during this period of great growth for both cities. In 1849, Baytown became one of two towns located withinHouston whenHouston annexed Harris County (later known as Houston). According to legend, Mayor James Dickey of Houston decided to rename all local businesses after himself instead of using their original names because he wanted everyone to know who controlled them - something that still exists today! During his tenure as mayor from 1951 until his death in 1972, Dickey built many important landmarks in Houston including Lakewood Stadium and Toyota Stadium which are still standing today as among some of America's most famous sports venues! Dickey also helped bring about major changes to Houston through various ordinances he championed including Mandatory Segregation which led to integration; enactment of Restrictive covenants regulating land values which increased home ownership rates; passage of Zoning Ordinance No 2 which limited business activity near streetcar lines; passage finallyof Clean Air Act Amendments allowing indoor smoking indoors beginning January 1st 1965
