The bay at which Bay City now stands was first used for shipping by the Spanish in the 17th century; it became an important route between San Antonio de Bexar and Texarkana during the 19th century. The early residents of BayCity were farmers who grew corn, cotton, potatoes, watermelons, onions, garlic, tomatoes, beans (golf balls are made out of beans), sweet potatoes (a type of tuber), hay bales (fodder for horses), cattle (which were raised on pastures near where present-day headlights are found), saltpeter (used to make munitions) and other products from their lands. In addition to farming and ranching activities there were also several businesses established in late nineteenth century BayCity including two grocery stores operated by Jens Jensen & Son prior to incorporation into the Merchants Bank Company in 1892; one store alone produced over $10 million worth of goods annually according to local historian Donny Ladd’s book “ Texas Renaissance:baycity1899-1929” Additionally some lumberjacks brought up sawmills along Willow Creek providing lumber for churches etc., but these mills closed down within 10 years or so due various factors such as competition from more efficient machines coming onto the market A post office was established at BayCity in 1874 because growth had exploded there with people moving here from all over central Texas looking for opportunities As Manufacturing boomed beginning in World War I vast amounts of materials began flowing into bay city making it an ideal place to build plants like Lockheed Martin's plant begun operations here immediately following world war 1 jobs came pouring ashore with workers building aircraft carriers USS Yorktown(CV-4)and USS Enterprise(CV-6). By 1945 almost every job left behind had been filled including many who worked at Ford Motor Company's massive Plant One just outside bay city .By this time most everyone here knew each other pretty well so socializing wasn't necessary any longer

Bay City, Texas is a city in U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Harris County. As of the 2010 census, Bay City had a population of 97,786. The city was named for General James Kenedy Baynham (1789-1859), lieutenant colonel in United States Army during the Mexican War and later commissioner at Veracruz during its occupation by France in 1848-49. On July 15, 1861, Confederate General Stephen F Crockett's 1st Texas brigade arrived at Bay City and took up arms against Union forces under Colonel Gideon Welles on Fort Sam Houston (later Fort Brown). After spending nine days besieging Fort Brown while supplies were brought up from Corpus Christi and New Orleans to help Crockett's brigade succeed in driving Welles out of town on September 2nd,[1][2]Bay City became an important staging point for Confederate forces as they campaigned through central Texas against Union forces commanded by Major General Winfield Scott Hancock.[3][4][5] In 1898 – one year after Texarkana was founded as a settlement – Bay City acquired its first paved street when Judge A W Cockerell donated land along Loop 1604 for that purpose[6]. Withgrowth led to annexation by Houston in 1907; however, annexation did not bring about increased development until World War II when heavy industry began arriving with waves of new immigrants drawn by wartime jobs opportunities.[7] Of particular note are two phases associated with World War II: residential constructionPhase I which began in 1940 and ended 1945; and industrial operationsPhase II which began 1942 and continued through 1945.[8][9] In recent years development has been sporadic due to economic conditions; however there have been several efforts underway to revive dormant businesses including reopening local breweries[10], creating mixed-use districts called "smart growth" plans[11], or developing new retail corridors downtown like Main Street Corridor[12]. The history of Bay City goes back more than 400 years as cotton plantations grew nearby; early residents cultivated crops such as corn, beans, cottonseed oilseed rape (a type of rapeseed)and rice while entertaining visitors from around the region with their country homes complete with gardens and hunting lodges dotting rural areas near present day Sugar Land Parkway East entranceway leading east into town center
Bay City was founded in 1836 by Capt. James Fenton and his wife, Mary. The town was named for Bay City, Michigan, the site of their first landing on the Texas coast. In 1839, Bay City became the county seat of Hudspeth County. In 1849, it became the capital of Texas and remained so until its annexation by Mexico in1865.
