The first post office in Bay City was established on December 12, 1872. The town's name was chosen to honor American Commodore John D. Bayne who had died in 1865 while leading an expedition against the Seminole Indians. The current community was founded in 1902 by J.D. Lane and his brother-in-law Wm Hargrave as a fishing and boating resort on a small island in Galveston Bay just off the coast of Bay City Island which became known as "Lane's Isle". In 1906, Lane donated land for a high school and college which were eventually built at what is now Trinity University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Baylor College of Law; Lane also gave $5,000 for building materials and salaries for teachers at both schools. In 1951, LBJ visited Bay City during his air force service as captain of squadron V-22 Osprey aircraft stationed at Moody Air Force Base; he spoke with local officials about plans to build himself a presidential library near Houston but never followed through with it because he decided not to run for office that year. In 1969, LBJ traveled to Bay city again when he made his final campaign stop before being inaugurated as 44th president of the United States; instead of going to Houston however he appeared at a football game played at Midway Stadium between San Antonio Missions High School (now Dimmit) and Clear Lake High School (now Rice). Bay City experienced many economic changes during its time as an agricultural center due to flood control projects completed by state agencies such as the Texas Department of Transportation around the turnofthe century which diverted more water from the Brazos River into Galveston Harbor making essential levees obsolete thereby allowing popular fisherman like bayou boatman Alvarado Lee to catch red snapper from deep withingalveston harbor up until recently considered uneconomical . Today there are several businesses catering specifically to seafood lovers including Shrimp Shack & Lobster Shack located on Main Street just north of Uptown Park while Freshaside Seafood has replaced much older ranches along US 90 corridor with modern seafood processing plants complete with refrigerated tanks capable handling fresh seafood direct from ports all over America

Over time, Bay City has seen significant growth due to its location and its importance as a commercial center for both McLennan County and Texas statewide. Today, Bay City is a thriving community with over 1,000 residents and continues to grow in popularity due to its history, culture and attractions
Bay City was founded in 1847 by John S. Bayless and his family. The town grew up around the Bay City Lighthouse, which was first built in 1836. In 1865, Bayless donated land to the city for a public square. The following year, Bayless died and is buried in the town cemetery.
