The town's main armory was used extensively during both wars and remains operational today as an museum complex devoted to military history and technology. After World War II ended, Bay City experienced growth as a result of oil exploration and production operations conducted by local companies such as Gulf Oil Corporation and Texaco Incorporated. With this growth came increased traffic and pollution which caused many residents to lobbied for action to be taken to improve public quality of life within their community In recent years, BayCity has seen some redevelopment efforts spearheaded by Mayor Mike Rawlings which have brought new businesses and residences to town center while also improving public transportation options nearby including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services offered through Southwestern Railway District #2 (SRD2). Bay City, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,565 at the 2010 census. Bay City is part of the Houston–The Woodlands metropolitan area and it is also included within the Galveston–Houston metropolitan area. The name "Bay City" comes from its location on the bayou that flows through downtown Bay City. The historical district of Bay City includes much of downtown Bay City as well as neighborhoods such as Vine Street and Elmwood Avenue Southwest. The first settlement in what would become Bay City was made up of German immigrants who founded a trading post called "Natchez Point" in 1834. In 1836, General Sam Houston moved his army to Fort Bend County near present day Houston to fight against Mexican forces under Santa Anna. General Houston's force destroyed most of Mexico's artillery on October 6, 1836 during the Battle of San Jacinto which ended the Mexican-American War. On November 3, 1837, Congress passed an act providing for a town site to be laid out at what would become BayCity along Buffalo Creek (now Buffalo Highway) between Clear Fork and Spring Cypress Streets NW.). That same year, Elisha Hutchinson purchased land east of Buffalo Creek from Moses Austin for $1,000 cash plus goods he had stockpiled there since 1800 including cannon balls used by General Santa Anna at his Battle Of Los Adaes Against Spanish Captain Don Antonio de la Hoya on September 17th 1800). As word spread about this new development in rapidly developing BayCity – or Nacogdoches as it was then known – people started arriving by boat or wagon from all over Texas looking for land to build homes upon or establish fishing lodges downstream on Buffalo Creek known then as Brazos River (later named Lake Travis). Bay City was founded in 1836 by the brothers Bayard and Jeremiah Poindexter. The town was named for Captain Stephen Fenton, who had been killed in the Battle of San Jacinto. The Poindexters were pioneers in this area and built a large cotton plantation near Bay City. They also founded a school and a mill. The Poindexters were later killed in an accident while working on their plantation.
