At first it was called San Antonio de Bexar and later renamed Bay City after its founder. The city experienced significant growth during its early years and by 1840 had a population of over 10,000 people. However, due to political instability in the state at the time, Bay City's status as capital was short-lived. In 1845 it reverted back to San Antonio de Bexar until it became an independent republic on January 6, 1850. After statehood, Bay City continued to serve as an important center for trade and industry until it fell victim to economic depression in the late 1800s.
