Bay City, Texas is a small town located in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. Bay City is also the county seat for San Jacinto County. In 1836, when Mexico acquired what is now Texas, Bay City became part of Mexican Tamaulipas and its inhabitants were forced to leave in order to avoid being annexed into Mexico. In 1865, General Sam Houston decided to sell land east of the Trinity River to a group of men led by Colonel George Hogg for $5 an acre (1/2 acres = 100 feet²). This purchase created one of the most significant Events in American History- Hogg donated land which would become known as Hempstead Township, making it possible for people from all over America to come and settle there and start businesses. During World War I, Bay City served as both a military base and munitions plant for the United States Army Ammunition Company No. 2 (now known as BAE Systems). In 1941, during World War II, Bay City became home to Naval Air Station Wichita after It was dedicated on December 10th off Shafter Island southeast of Corpus Christi (the original naval air station). NAS Wichita operated from here until it closed in 1982 due to budget cuts associated with Operation Desert Storm; however NAS Wichita remains a popular tourist attraction today thanks to its unique history and USS Midway Museum Annex which contains artifacts related to Naval aviation during World War II including aircraft models & fighter planes!
Bay City, Texas was founded in 1836 by Major James Fenton and his men after they discovered the Brazos River. The town was originally called Fort Bend County, but it became Bay City in 1849 when the original county was divided into two parts, Bay City County and Fort Bend County. The city's first mayor was A.J. Hillman. In 1860, the city lost its status as a post office to Brownsville because of the opening of an mail route from Austin through Brownsville.
