The Bay City Chamber of Commerce has been serving Bay City since 1892. The history of Bay City goes back to 1852 when it was founded as a trading post by Johnnie Crain and his brother-in-law, Jesse Jameson. In 1875, Bay City became the county seat ofHouston County after the creation of that county from parts of Galveston and Harris County. In 1907, bay city annexed what is now Springtown and developed it as an agricultural community with operations such as cotton ginning, haymaking, cattle raising, pigs rooting through cedar trees for acorns and other nuts, and several grocery stores catering to farmers and their families. The first school in bay city was built in 1886 by Mrs. Mary Jane Fenton on land donated by her husband Samuel Fenton Jr.. At that time there were only two schools in Houston County: one for white students and one for black students which was called “Plymouth” School until 1902 when it changed its name to BayCity School because of funds raised from philanthropists who purchased the building on Third Street where it still stands today (now known as the Samuel Hirsch Education Center). In 1915 construction began on what is now Memorial Stadium which served as home field for many years for Clearwater High School (now Clearwater Community College) before being bought by Bay City Schools in 1972 and moved to its current site across Veterans Boulevard from Methodist Hospital. In 1967 construction began on Interurban railroad tracks that ran through bay city making it possible to bring more people into town during business hours rather than having to drive out into Houston or Galveston which had become clogged with traffic during morning rush hour
