In 1916, they opened a grocery store and post office. They also began to sell land around their store for development. In 1928, the Cochrans donated $25,000 to help build a high school and small college in Balch Springs. The college was named after them both- Johnnie Cochran High School.Over time, other residents of Balch Springs came to form businesses and families there too- many of whom remain important today such as the Beaumont family (owners of Beaumont Oil Company), Harry Hays (founder of Hays Radio Corporation), Jack Dempsey (boxing champion), Roy Ford (founder of Ford Motor Company) and others. Balch Springs has been home to many significant events over its history- including World War I services at the local churchyards; baseball games played on the original Richards Field; dances held at Moe’s bar; President Lyndon Johnson’s famous “I Can't Quit You Baby” speech; Goodwin Corrigan’s professional wrestling debut; riots that occurred during True Grit movie production; Hurricane Ike damage done to homes hereabouts; and more recent events like Barack Obama's victory over John McCain during the 2008 U.S election campaign or SXSW Festival performances hereabouts).
